What I'm Working On

Hi, everyone.  I wanted to say that - well - wow!  I had no idea before starting this blog just how many people were in the same boat as I.  Apparently, although the age of quality cotton goods seems to be disappearing, there is a backlash of interest, which hopefully will mean that it will experience a resurgence!

I just wanted to post a quick update for those who've been waiting for new posts on my latest finds and help with either buying or selling old sheets.  This is for all of you who are as obsessed as I am with finding old-fashioned, strong cotton sheets that crinkle loudly and satisfyingly....

Here's an excerpt I wrote that summarizes what's been going on with the blog.  It's from a note I just sent one reader by email:

Thanks so much for contacting me.  I'm still doing ongoing research on this, yes.  I haven't posted in a couple of months because of health issues for myself & family - my child is starting school for the first time (he was homeschooled before) and has brought home every virus known to mankind this season!
For this blog, I'm working on a couple of requests of people who emailed me, and I'm also working on getting samples of stuff to review.  I regularly do product reviews, but usually of stuff I buy myself.  Since my sheet budget has spiraled to zero after buying way too many old sheets, I have to find SOME way to review more sheets...so I'm going to try to see if [some of the bigger suppliers] will send me samples....
In any case, do let me know how it goes.  I really enjoy doing this blog.  I am always on the hunt for good household products such as one could find in yesteryear (my current obsession is wooden utensils).
Take care,
Chris
So, to wind up, I guess I'll end on a bit of a crass note.  There have been slight delays posting on this sheet blog because I've been feeling...wait for it...sheety!  (Forgive me.  I know.  This is no place to be so tacky, or even too smooth - just crisp and crinkly and toasty warm and yet cool and airy, too.)

So I hope the latest round of illness will be gone soon and I can post again with updates on my current stash of sheets - though I will tell you quickly that all the sheets I got from eBay are universally hardy, wonderful, and sturdy, though I wash them heavily and often use bleach.

In the meantime, I hope y'all will continue to let us know what you discover - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

  1. Once in a very great while you might provide a ballpark date [usually just the year] in your blog. If possible, it would be helpful if you'd add the date of each entry so we know how current the content is, if the blog is still active. thank you for your extensive sleuthing on all things sheets! 2. I hope you and the family are feeling "bedder" Chris. If you were to search for these sheets on ebay what terms would you use exactly?

  4. Greetings -

I'm Goldilocks when it comes to sheets... well, actually pillow cases. I need them to be cool and smooth for my sensitive face... just learned today that "crisp" is the term I want to use. I've tried many different high thread count sheets in search of what I like... Most recently Boll and Branch. The sheets are ok, but I had to take off the pillow cases and put on my old ones before I could fall asleep last night. I wouldn't spend the money on Boll and Branch if I had it to do again. Yes, I'm the guy in Macy's that's opening every package of sheets and rubbing them on his face... they have to be "just right", or I'll never sleep. Thanks for this blog. It's been an education.

  5. I ‘accidentally' bought a pair of ‘vintage sheets’ at Ross or TJ Maxx, can’t remember which. I had exactly the reaction that you did when thinking back to the sheets I grew up with. These sheets are incredible! They are a tight weave, are crisp but smooth and are practically wrinkle free. They are 100% cotton and have no tag that tells me the brand or anything else. After sleeping on these sheets, my husband and I totally agree that they are fabulous and we want more. But, my sources for sheets are the places like Ross’s, etc. Like you, I have to watch what I spend.

All this long writing just to tell you how grateful I am to find the information you are providing. I can’t wait to start shopping and find some of those cool, tightly-
woven, crisp, cool when you need them cool, and warm when you need them warm sheets!

Thanks for all the work you have done and saved me from!

  6. When I was growing up (in the 60's) our sheets were thick, cool and crisp. I was quite spoiled in that our sheets went to the cleaners to be washed and starched. Oh what I would give to have that feeling again. Vermont Store sheets come close but they are pricey. Still, I am going to have to breakdown and order another set.
